King Edward I (Edward Longshanks) is Born

17 June 1239

Today marks the birthday of King Edward I, popularly known as Edward Longshanks. Edward was born on 17 June 1239 and ruled as King of England from 1272 to 1307. The nickname ‘Longshanks’ became associated with Edward because at 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall, he towered over most of his contemporaries. His other nickname, Hammer of the Scots, came from the tenuous relationship with Scotland that he maintained during the latter part of his reign.
